HepCARE: Supporting the Mission to Eliminate Hepatitis by 2030

In the UK, the fight against hepatitis has reached a decisive stage. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set a global target to eliminate hepatitis by 2030, while NHS England has committed £20 million to a three-year programme expanding opt-out blood-borne virus testing in emergency departments. The ambition with ED-testing is clear: identify more patients, diagnose earlier, and provide effective treatment to prevent further infections.

After identifying the patients with hepatitis in the emergency department, the challenge remains: how to manage this complex patient cohort to achieve concrete outcomes? In this effort, a Nordic health tech innovation, HepCARE by BCB Medical, is helping to make outcomes measurable and care more effective, all whilst improving patient pathways through Real-World data.

From Identification to Impact

HepCARE has been designed to bridge the gaps in hepatitis care pathways. The system manages the patients that are identified through ED-testing, integrates data from multiple sources, and enables real-time monitoring of treatment outcomes. By consolidating information across different hospital systems into one intuitive view, it gives clinicians what they need most: a clear picture of each patient’s condition and the effectiveness of their treatment.

“In many hospitals, data is still fragmented across separate systems and across multiple trusts. HepCARE reduces clerical pressures and makes critical insights available at a glance.”
- Thomas Wintrip, Business & Partnership Director UK, BCB Medical

This challenge is especially pressing in the UK, where digital health records are not always as integrated as in the Nordics. HepCARE provides a straightforward solution to this complex cohort management of Hepatitis patients.

Clinical Value: Better Outcomes for Patients

For frontline clinicians, Trust and Regional Managers, as well as national bodies like the UKHSA, HepCARE means fewer silos and less administrative burden. Laboratory results, prescribed medicines and patient-reported outcomes are all linked in one dashboard.

This allows doctors and clinic managers to follow patients’ progress in real time and focus on improving the effectiveness of care.

Real-World Proof: InfCareHIV in Sweden

A striking example of how unified data can transform care comes from the InfCareHIV case in Sweden. InfCareHIV is a nationwide quality register connected to a clinical decision support tool and research database. It was established to ensure equal and effective care for people living with HIV and to enable long-term follow-up.

“When I started working at Karolinska University Hospital in 2021, I took over the care of around 500 patients. Getting a grasp of the patient data can be challenging, but thanks to InfCareHIV, I could see all the data with one glance.”

- Dr Christina Carlander, Director of the National Quality Register InfCareHIV

This is precisely the kind of clarity, efficiency and clinical insight that HepCARE now brings to hepatitis treatment.

Value for NHS Decision-Makers

For NHS leaders and IT managers, the value lies in efficiency and scalability. HepCARE integrates seamlessly with existing hospital systems, removing the need for duplicate data entry and reducing staff workload. Automated data flows improve accuracy, while the platform’s analytics support smarter resource allocation across entire regions.

By linking together clinics and hospitals, HepCARE enables monitoring not only at the patient level but also across populations — a crucial capability for NHS England as it seeks to demonstrate the impact of care.
